A new dawn....
2nd July will go down as a landmark day in the history of both Indian Law and Indian social evolution. The Delhi High Court legalised consensual homosexual sex today and repealed section 377, a law that surely should have gone out with the dark ages. One of the worse legacies of the British rule, gay activists have worked tirelessly to fight and defeat it. Special mention must be made of the Naz foundation who put in so much effort and of course, of all those unnamed soldiers in this just battle. As expected religious leaders have opposed this with lame excuses such as homosexuality being "immoral" and causing "sexual anarchy" etc. I will not waste any more lines on those ignorant and intolerant beings. This day belongs completely to our friends, fellow brothers and sisters who we are proud and honoured to stand with as they finally receive their long overdue rights to their happiness and dignity. Though there have been many occasions when I have been proud to call myself an Indian, this surely takes the lead. The law has given due respect to the LGBT community. Now we need to ensure that our society follows suit. Next step, legalising gay marriages. Let us celebrate this victory today but not rest on our laurels. Tomorrow we must prepare for the next battle...all of us, in our small ways must strive to bring this change....and then maybe, we will be closer to being a truly equal society.
